Nintendo just announced a new Hyrule Warriors sequel during the Switch 2 showcase, set to drop this winter. The game, titled Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment, takes place before the events of Tears of the Kingdom—similar to how Age of Calamity predated Breath of the Wild. This time, we’ll see Zelda in her second lead role (if you don’t count those old CD-i titles), battling alongside Raru and Mineru against Ganondorf’s forces.

Set during the Imprisoning War, the game follows the story of the Secret Stone guardians. While Age of Calamity was revealed as a non-canon, divergent timeline, many believe this new title might directly lead into Tears of the Kingdom, giving us a satisfying “good guys win” ending where Ganondorf gets locked away. As one r/Games subreddit user put it, “The Imprisoning War ends with the good guys triumphant and Ganondorf imprisoned.”
There’s some debate among fans—some argue that Age of Calamity was better off as its own story because it allowed Nintendo to explore fresh ideas without being tied down by a predetermined ending. Only time will tell if Age of Imprisonment follows that path or fits neatly into the established Zelda timeline.
