Summary
- Larian Studios revitalized Baldur’s Gate 3, but now other developers are being considered to continue the series.
- Owlcat Games is a potential candidate to take up the mantle based on their previous work.
It’s hard to believe that it’s been a year and a half since Baldur’s Gate 3 hit the shelves. Larian Studios took on the challenge and revitalized the series, firmly placing themselves in the spotlight for RPG fans everywhere. But now, Larian is moving on to new projects, and Hasbro, which holds the Dungeons & Dragons IP, is now accepting pitches from other developers to continue the legacy of Baldur’s Gate.
At this point, we still don’t know which studio will take up the mantle. The task isn’t easy—only a handful of developers have the chops to deliver a CRPG that’s both expansive and deeply engaging. Personally, I believe Owlcat Games might be the best candidate, considering their work on titles like Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader and Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous. However, even that choice comes with high expectations.
Fans of the original Baldur’s Gate games, created by BioWare during its heyday, had long dreamed of a revival under Larian’s direction. Even with Larian’s track record, some people had their doubts. In a recent discussion at GDC, Hasbro’s SVP of Digital Games, Dan Ayoub, acknowledged that Baldur’s Gate still holds a lot of interest for gamers. He mentioned that the company is in the midst of planning the next steps and hinted that we shouldn’t have to wait much longer for some exciting updates.
When asked about a potential sequel, Ayoub explained that the team isn’t in a rush. Instead, they’re taking a careful, measured approach. The goal is to raise the bar with every new project, ensuring that the series only gets better with time.
So, what do you think? Is there a studio out there that you believe is the perfect fit to continue the Baldur’s Gate saga? Maybe Owlcat Games, or perhaps you think it might be best left as it is? Share your thoughts in the comments below.
I think Owlcat Games could be a great choice to continue the Baldur’s Gate saga.
